Caplin's first e-Commerce breakfast was held in Toronto recently.

A group of 17 senior e-Commerce executives from leading banks were treated to a sumptuous buffet breakfast. They also had the opportunity to network and
to discuss current IT investment trends in the Canadian capital markets.
Robert Burbach, senior analyst from IDC Financial Insights
presented the results of some of his recent research.
Canadian Capital Markets in the Age of Uncertainty
For copyright reasons we're unable to provide you with a copy or transcript of Rob Burbach's excellent presentation entitled, "Canadian Capital Markets in the Age of Uncertainty". But we took some notes while he was making the presentation, and we're happy to share these with you:
Rob opened his presentation with a quote from his fellow Canadian,Chrystia Freeland, formerly managing editor of the Financial Times and now editor at large at Reuters.
"The battle of rival ideologies has ended not because, as Fukuyama foresaw, the triumph of capitalist democracy has been universally acclaimed. Instead, it is because all of us have realized we face a new challenge - how to thrive in the high tech, global economy - and no one country or single ideology is yet certain of getting this exactly right.
This isn't the cold war, or the clash of civilizations, or even the end of history - it is the age of uncertainty, as the entire world struggles to understand and keep up with the biggest economic transformation since the industrial revolution."
(Extract from "Plugging into the age of uncertainty" October 7th, 2010)
Rob then reviewed some of the major trends taking place in the capital markets and how these were reflected in Canada. In particular he considered:
- Trade imbalances between the USA, China and the European Union
- The rise in CAD vs. USD and UKP but its depreciation against other currencies
- The better position of Canadian consumers compared to those in the USA
- The continuing impact of the US housing issue
- Recent IPOs on Canadian exchanges
He then moved to considering Canadian specific issues including:
- Looming and blind-side regulatory changes
- The complexity of Canadian regulation
- 2010: significant business initiatives in the Canadian market
- Areas of IT investments by Canadian capital market participants
Next he reviewed the customer experience, especially:
- Customers' increasing expectation of better service
- How this is being driven by technology
- That trading in the UK is becoming more electronic, both on multi-dealer and single-dealer platforms, led by corporate customers
- That this trend hasn't taken hold in Canada, yet
And finally he considered the benefits that firms such as Barclays Capital, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and Nomura gain from their investments in single-dealer platforms and offered some further ideas for the audience to consider.

Then Paul Caplin, CEO of Caplin Systems then made a presentation from his Apple iPad on the current trends in mobile trading and Web application technologies.
For reasons of confidentiality the event was not recorded, but we recorded Paul making the same presentation subsequently. To watch this presentation, which runs to 23 minutes, click below.
