Installing Cygwin

Here's how to install Cygwin so it has the correct packages needed to run the Deployment Framework.

Whilst these instructions for installing the the 32-bit version of Cygwin/X were correct at the time of writing, because Cygwin is third-party software, Caplin Systems Ltd cannot guarantee that the installation procedure for later versions of Cygwin will not change. For the definitive set of 32-bit Cygwin installation instructions, refer to the Cygwin web site, and the page http://www.cygwin.com/install.html in particular.

The most important point is that you should install the minimum set of Cygwin packages listed in step 7 below.
  1. Download and run the 32-bit Cygwin setup.exe.
  2. Choose, “Install from Internet”. This will still save the package files to your download directory.
    Click Next to proceed.
  3. The default Install Root is C:\cygwin which should be fine.
    Click Next to proceed.
  4. Local Package Directory should default to the directory that you ran setup.exe from.
    Click Next to proceed.
  5. If you don't need a proxy connection to the download site, just choose Direct Connection .
    Click Next to proceed.
  6. Select the nearest mirror site from which to download the package.
    Click Next to proceed.
  7. Setup displays a list of available Cygwin packages. Select the following packages to download and install:
    1. unzip (from Archive)
    2. zip (from Archive)
    3. vim (from Editors)
    4. vim-common (from Editors)
    5. ncurses (from Utils)
  8. Click Next to begin the download process.
If you see a "Connecting" message on this screen for a long period of time, you may want to try another mirror.
  9. When the packages have been downloaded, setup automatically installs them.
We highly recommend that you allow Cygwin Setup to create Desktop and Start Menu icons for you; these icons simply launch a bash shell.
  10. Click Finish to close the setup program.

You have now successfully installed Cygwin/X.
