Caplin Systems expands Chess sponsorship

December 14, 2020

Caplin, the specialist provider of desktop and mobile e-trading technology, today announced that it is extending its commitment to chess which started with support of the Hastings International Chess Congress last year. This year’s physical congress cannot take place, but Caplin will continue as the primary sponsor of an online tournament in Hastings’ name. The Caplin Hastings Online All-Play-All will take place on 9th and 10th January 2021. This will be a 12-player all-play-all rapid play online competition.

Caplin is further delighted to support the Caplin British Online Chess Championships which will take place over two weeks from 18th December to 3rd January 2021.

“Last year we were delighted to support the Hastings International Chess Congress, a historic and important event. Unfortunately, Covid has caused this format to be postponed, but in its place, we are sponsoring a new online all-play-all tournament,” said John Ashworth, CEO of Caplin. “As the popularity of Chess continues to grow, particularly in the aftermath of the outstanding Netflix series ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, we expect more people than ever to follow play from around the world. We are also very happy to support the ECF with their British Online Championships, and in addition we will be reserving two places for winners of that event to participate in the Hastings tournament.”

He added, “Supporting these events allows Caplin to play our part in promoting the sport globally, and positioning our firm alongside chess enthusiasts, many of whom have strong STEM skills.”

Players who have so far expressed interest in the Hastings Online All-Play-All include GMs Michael Adams, Luke McShane, Gawain Jones, David Howell, Nick Pert and Glenn Flear. Two places will be reserved for the winner and runner-up of the Caplin British Online Championships.

Commentary will be provided by the Ginger GM Simon Williams and the current British Women’s Champion, WGM/IM Jovanka Houska.
